EMS Operations Leadership

For many EMS agencies, especially volunteer agencies, leadership development is not a core skill or attribute of the organization.  Even programs such as ICS, NIMS and others do not provide strong leadership foundations, but rather are hopeful that leadership skills will emerge.

 

The EMS Operations Leadership program is designed to evolve the leadership skills, legal awareness, financial acumen, decision making and managerial capabilities of EMS leaders.  The program is suitable for both paid and volunteer EMS leaders that are responsible for/or oversee field operations, training, logistics or business management. and finance.

The program is specifically designed to prepare new and experienced EMS leaders to excel at leading both front-line and back-office operations. 

 

The objectives of this program are as follows:

 

To assure EMS leaders can detail and develop appropriate metric-based objectives.

Assure EMS leaders can demonstrate and employ CANI principles within their scope of authority.

Detail corporate structures and basic financial management principles.

Understand legal requirements for their locality as well as key concepts related to civil and criminal law.

Establish foundational knowledge related to team motivation, disciplinary action, and workforce development.

Develop and employ protocols for critical decision-making and prioritization.

 

 

The goal of this program is to ultimately prepare graduates to effectively lead EMS Operations.  This is a foundational program that provides the basis for the leaders on-going evolution and maturity.

Syllabus: EMS Operations Leadership

EMS Operations Leadership is a 16-hour training program that is conducted at a mutually agreed upon location.  All CEU candidates must pass both a written and psychomotor skills exam before awarding of CEU and certificate of completion. Students must complete the entire 16-hour training program without exception to take the final written and skills exam.

Requirements:  Students must have the following certifications:

 

EMR, EMT-B, AEMT, Paramedic

AHA BLS

ICS 100/NIMS 700

Course Format: This is a lecture and hands-on program.

CEU: 12 (8 Academic + 4 Skills)

Instructor: John Gomez, is the Founder and Chief Instructor for Group Espada.  John has over 10 years of experience instructing advanced tactical training programs which incorporate tactical psychology, tactical dynamics in small team settings and tactical leadership.  John is also the creator of the Tactical Response Mindset thesis and Rational Response Theory.  Further John has been the President/CTO of multinational corporations and has extensive background in corporate business operations.

This module begins with an introduction to foundational concepts related to EMS operations.   This includes basic principles of finance, legal structures, and management.

This module exposes the student to various legal principles which are critical to leadership decision-making and strategy.  The principles presented are customized to the organization’s operational locality.

Module III: Effective Leadership Tactics

This module focuses on presenting leadership tactics that ultimately focus on quality and process improvement. Embracing an “EMS constant and never-ending innovation” mindset is a key goal of this module as well as helping the leader develop crew-resource management skills and capabilities.

Module IV: Application of EMS Operations Leadership

This module is designed to build muscle memory of the concepts presented throughout the training.  The module includes elements designed to help small units recover from actively recover from bad decisions as well as dynamically address changes in patient status or environmental factors.
